Circulation Guidelines and Goals

KINDERGARTEN: The kindergarten students participate in read alouds and literacy activities. The classes learn about caring for books, the parts of a book, the roles of authors and illustrators, and types of text (fiction, nonfiction, poetry, picture books, etc.). Kindergartners also participate in basic technology lessons and practice. Kindergartners select library books to bring back to their classrooms and borrow for the week from the PICTURE BOOKS (E) and EARLY (EMERGENT) READER (ER) shelves. 

GRADE 1
The first grade students participate in read aloud stories and literacy activities. The classes learn about caring for books, types of text (fiction, nonfiction, poetry, picture books, etc.), story elements, and informational text features. 
 First grade students also participate in basic technology lessons and practice. First grade students select books to bring back to their classrooms and borrow for the week from the PICTURE BOOKS (E) and EARLY (EMERGENT) READER (ER) shelves. It is a goal in library to transition first grade students into using the general FICTION & NON FICTION sections of the library while continuing to make appropriate book selections for themselves.

GRADE 2: The second grade students complete a book exchange each week from all sections of the library. Students are taught and guided in selecting "just right" books for themselves using the FIVE FINGER TEST. During library classes, second
 grade students participate in read aloud stories and literacy activities. 
Students review and practice library and literacy skills from previous grades, learn more about informational text, and develop basic research and technology skills.

GRADES 3, 4 & 5: The students in grades 3, 4 and 5 complete a book exchange each week. The book selection may be a free choice or may be guided by their classroom teacher in order to coincide with the curriculum. Students are guided in selecting "just right" books for themselves and reminded to use the FIVE FINGER TEST to choose appropriate books. Along with a book exchange, library classes include lessons and activities based on a variety of library topics and skills including literacy, research, and technology. The goal is for students to use the library independently, practice and utilize the skills they learn.  


Manchester School District Library Borrowing Guidelines: It is a guideline of the Manchester School District Elementary Libraries that students are responsible for taking good care of their library books and returning them in a timely manner. In the event a book is damaged or lost, students are responsible for paying for it. If this a financial hardship please do not hesitate to contact the Library Media Specialist. If the lost book is found within the school year, the money will be reimbursed. Thank you!
